Myth Busting: Acne

"Your acne is terrible! Lay off the candy bars and the cokes," admonishes the mother of a 15-year-old. This has been the war cry of the parent of an adolescent for decades.

Not only does this irritate the teenager but, more importantly, it propagates misconceptions. He hates the nagging. It makes him feel guilty for ingesting things that cause the facial rash which he detests. Thus, he is responsible for one of his greatest problems.

In reality cokes and candy bars only cause skin lesions if one is allergic to any of the components. Studies have never clearly linked diet to acne
