Telemed visits have surfaced due to the corona virus epidemic. Now I can keep my appointment with my doctor after all.

The Covid virus has given us many things, most of which we don’t want. But on the positive side the use of telemed visits has been accepted and even preferred by parents. In addition, the insurance companies are covering the cost of such visits.

Will it persist after the current corona virus is gone?

I am sure it will by popular demand from parents and patients. No time consuming trip to the doctor’s office in order to get a physician consult, as well as answer questions of the parents or patients.

Without a doubt it is a time saver.

But it only provides the history part of the evaluation. There is no physical exam of the patient, no laying on of hands.

One cannot assess neck stiffness, an inflamed ear drum, findings of pneumonia, specific abdominal tenderness or conduct a thorough neurologic exam. You say, “I know that.” I’m sure you do. But you may not appreciate the diagnostic importance of the physical exam.

The telemed visit may be adequate for a follow-up to assess effectiveness of medication.

That is assuming no exam of the patient is needed. I find the telemed visit is useful under certain conditions. Primarily when an examination is not needed.

Its convenience is obvious.

Its convenience is obvious. Its usefulness is limited. It will not replace the trip to the doctor in the majority of cases. Let’s accept this new service but not at the expense of patient care.
