Here is a publication packed full of information directed at parents.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’, AAP, publication of Grand Rounds for June 2020, Vol. 43 NO 6 had several excellent articles to inform parents.

EFFECT OF COOL RUNNING WATER FOR 20 MINUTES AFTER THERMAL BURN

Page 63 was an article that documented the efficacy of running cool water on the thermal burns for 20 minutes within three hours of the burn. It showed that this was a vital first aid immediate treatment. It also pointed out some interesting facts:

  1. This treatment was first described by Galen in the 2nd century
  2. The use of animal excrement, soy sauce, toothpaste, eggs, saliva or butter applied to burns was of little use, supported by no evidence and may even be detrimental.

MACROLIDES PRESCRIBED DURING PREGNANCY AND RISK OF FETAL MALFORMATIONS.

On page 65 the authors showed that a relationship between the use of macrolide antibiotics (i.e. erythromycin, zithromax) in pregnancy was associated with increased risk of major malformations in the fetus. They recommended the use of the old standby penicillin. Prevention is easier than correcting major malformations.

HIGH-VERSUS STANDARD-DOSE VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTATION IN PREGNANCY

Page 66 the authors pointed out that with the current life style changes and the measures taken to prevent sun exposure in children, vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and childhood is very important to maintain good bone health in our offspring.

ADENOTONSILLECTOMY HAS NO IMPACT ON COGNITIVE OUTCOMES

Page 68 shows that alleviating obstruction sleep apnea by adenotonsillectomy may cause improvement in behavioral dysfunction but should not show any increase in cognitive ability.

Not often do we get a single edition of any publication that gives this many useful parenting facts and recommendations.
