SLEEP DURATION AND KINDERGARTEN ADJUSTMENT
By Douglas M. Teti, PhD, et al.
PEDIATRICS, Vol. 150, Nu. 2, August 2022, pg. 46
It is no surprise reading this article that promotes 10 hours of sleep for any kinder child. Despite this there are a number of children attending kindergarten who essentially are sleep deprived.
The authors found that those who slept 10 or more hours per night experienced more favorable kinder outcomes in socioemotional, learning engagement and academic domains.
As you read this article you will say it is obvious. But the number of children that regularly get less than straight 10 hours of sleep per night is significant. I-phones and bedroom TV’s have contributed greatly to the sleep deficit. It is time to be a parent and take measures to be sure that this number of sleep hours is achieved.
On the Covid-19 front, finally some good news.
COVID-19 VACCINES: SAFE AND EFFECTIVE IN CHILDREN AGED 5 TO 11 YEARS
By Sara E. Oliver, MD, MSPH, et al.
PEDIATRICS, Vol. 150, Nu 2 August 2022, pg. 29
Dr. Oliver clearly shows that this vaccine is effective and safe for 5-11-year-old children.
The number of children who received the vaccine and suffered a condition of inflammation of the heart (Myocarditis) in this age group was 2.2 per 1 million doses given. Sixteen million doses were administered in this age group.
The usual incidence of Myocarditis in this population is 0.2 to 2.2 persons per million. As you can see the risk is similar whether you got the vaccine or not. Vaccines have led the way in the prevention of untold numbers of diseases. As the authors showed the vaccine is safe and effective. Don’t make your child susceptible to a serious disease based on unfound, emotional or political concepts.
